There is hardly any human alive on this planet that has never experienced sadness. Notice that we’re talking about sadness here, not depression. What is depression?

According to the 5th Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders (DSM-5), depression is “at least two weeks when a person experienced a depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities and had a majority of specified symptoms, such as problems with sleep, eating, energy, concentration, or self-worth.”

The ‘low’ mood you’ve been getting for a long time starts emptying you & affects your everyday life, you’re undergoing depression. You feel that you have lost yourself and life is never the same again. It could be joined by the urge to scream, kick, shout, cry & burst things out.

Depression is different for all ages

Types of Depression

Depression can be classified into the following types based on how it is affecting people & the behavioral changes that result.

  • Major Depression

Also known as MDD or unipolar depression is something that makes people feel low all day & every day. This goes on for at least two weeks continuously due to some recurrent life episodes.

  • Persistent Depression or Dysthymia

It’s a chronic depression condition with mild symptoms experienced for two years or more. The patient feels like living on autopilot mode with a loss of control over what’s happening with their lives.

  • Manic Depression or Bipolar Depression

People undergoing manic or bipolar depression often switch from a depressive mood to extremely high energy and vice versa in no time. 

  • Psychotic Depression

When individuals experience severe depressive incidents, they start feeling delusions and hallucinations. Such conditions are termed psychotic depression.

  • Postpartum Depression

New mothers feel depressed for a specific period after giving birth. It is known as postpartum depression. They cannot have adequate sleep, feel distant from their partners, away from their routine life, and feel that they may hurt their child. Mothers may even perceive that they are not good enough to care for their children.

  • Seasonal Depression or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

  • Situational Depression
